Reforms at the National Hajj Commission have been demanded by President Bola Tinubu’s chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and deputy chief of staff, Ibrahim Hadeija, in order to address problems like financial mismanagement, neglect, mistreatment of pilgrims, and delays in pilgrimage organizing.

Recall that accusations of unauthorized withdrawals and improper handling of the N90 billion 2024 Hajj intervention money led to the dismissal of previous NAHCON Chairman Jalal Arabi.

As part of their oversight of government agencies under the State House, the President’s officials made these comments on Wednesday during a fact-finding visit to NAHCON’s headquarters in Abuja, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the State House Media and Publicity Department.

What happened has happened, and we are here to chart a way forward,” Gbajabiamila declared. The system of the commission has to be changed to better fit the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Gbajabiamila, a former Nigerian Speaker, has suggested that states could fund the National Emergency Management Agency through insurance schemes or other methods. He argued that the commission should not be in controversy due to its mandate and its role in fulfilling religious and spiritual obligations for faith-based individuals. Gbajabiamila also noted that pilgrims travel annually to fulfill Islamic religious obligations and serve as ambassadors of Nigeria, carrying the nation’s emblem and flag on their chest. He emphasized that these pilgrims should represent Nigeria in their demeanor and conduct.

The commission’s mandate and representation should not be a source of controversy. Gbajabiamila stressed the importance of ensuring that the commission operates efficiently and effectively to support pilgrims in fulfilling their religious duties. He also highlighted the need for transparency and accountability in the management of funds allocated for pilgrimage activities.

Gbajabiamila lamented that the Commission frequently mistreated or ill-prepared Nigerian pilgrims, which occasionally resulted in their misbehaving. He emphasized the need for the Commission to prioritize the welfare and well-being of Nigerian pilgrims, ensuring they have a positive experience during their pilgrimage. Gbajabiamila urged the Commission to strive for excellence in all aspects of their operations to uphold Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage.
