The bus portion of a current transformer at the 330kV Jebba Transmission substation exploded, and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has blamed this for the nationwide grid breakdown. The explosion caused a significant drop in power supply across the country, leading to widespread blackouts.
The statement stated that the activation of the protective mechanism caused the busbars to restrain the explosion, averting a potential fire and additional harm to nearby equipment.
This was revealed in a statement by Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs.
The NCC report stated: “At the 330kV Jebba Transmission Substation, a current transformer’s bus section exploded. As anticipated, the protection system was triggered, and this quickly opened the busbars to curtail the explosion, preventing an outbreak of fire and additional damage to nearby equipment.”
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) described the situation as a temporary disruption, stating: “The national grid experienced a temporary disturbance at about 8:15am, today, October 19, 2024.” The statement further stated that the action of the protection system caused a temporary disturbance on the grid.
TCN added that the power supply to the station and other grid components had been restored after their engineers at Jebba successfully finished switchings, isolated the problematic current transformer, and reconfigured the busbar arrangement.
TCN assured the public that they are working diligently to prevent such incidents in the future and maintain a reliable power supply across the country. They also emphasized the importance of regular maintenance and monitoring of equipment to ensure the stability of the national grid.
