The recent interview by the Special Adviser on Political Matters to Governor Iliyasu Bihari Mai Jega regarding the expenditure for the upgrade of Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital has generated mixed reactions, as many people believe he was not the right person to offer such clarification.
The Chairman of one of the pressure groups, Zamfara Circle, Aminu Lawal Tsafe, stated that there is a moral need for the government of Dauda Lawal to openly explain how the amount was expended so that citizens can have a clear understanding.
Tsafe insisted that the defense offered by Mr. Maijega, the Special Adviser on Political Matters, is baseless because the appropriate ministry to offer such an explanation should be either the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Information, or the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.
He stated that while equipment has been provided as part of the hospital’s upgrade, it is not enough to deny people the right to demand an explanation of how the expenditure was incurred.
He noted that the condition of the hospital is known and that, from a realistic perspective, the hospital does not require any infrastructural upgrade.
He advised the government to be open and accountable to the people, as they have the right to demand accountability and to know how their money is being spent.
