The Edo State government has declared that all school closures will be indefinitely delayed due to an increase in fuel prices. The government cited financial constraints as the reason for the delay in reopening schools. They are currently exploring alternative solutions to address the issue.

Ojo Akin-Longe, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education in Benin, signed a memo issued by the government yesterday declaring this.

As per the permanent secretary, the scheduled resume on September 9 has been postponed till a later date.

The government has issued an official statement directing schools to stay closed because of the strain brought on by the recent rise in fuel prices as well as the difficulties faced by parents and guardians.

The message stated, “Given the current circumstances and the mounting tension caused by the fuel price hike, the government urges parents, guardians, and caregivers to monitor the activities of their children and wards closely.”

The move has been referred to by the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “expensive political gimmickry.”

Peter Uwadiae-Enosorogbe, the state publicity secretary for the All Progressives (APC), called the state government’s action a “political gimmick” in an interview with newsmen.
