According to reports, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has launched a seven-day warning strike in response to the kidnapping of their colleague, Dr Ganiyat Popoola, who was kidnapped about eight months ago.
Dr. Dele Abdullahi, President of NARD, announced the strike at an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council. According to him, the strike that began at 12:00 a.m. on Monday is not only a warning, but also total.
He declared, “There will be no concessions or emergency care during this period. The strike is total.”
On December 27, 2023, Popoola, a registrar in the National Eye Centre’s Department of Ophthalmology in Kaduna, together with her husband and nephew, went missing. Popoola and her nephew are still being held captive, despite the release of her husband in March.
NARD members have staged protests to call for Dr. Popoola’s release at all of the country’s tertiary hospitals.
