In Edo, the Police Command said it has begun removing illegal guns and ammunition from the state ahead of the September 21 governorship election.
Command spokesperson SP Moses Yamu cited state commissioner of police Nemi Iwo as saying as much on Saturday in Benin.
During a meeting with the heads of political parties and their respective candidacies for governor, Iwo stated that the goal was to guarantee the safety of the election process.
The commissioner made a plea to them to persuade their followers not to participate in any kind of violence during the upcoming election.
He gave them his word that there would be enough protection to guarantee that nobody would be intimidated or harassed when exercising their right to vote.
But the commissioner promised them that all parties involved, including the electoral materials, would be secured for a peaceful election by the police and other sister security authorities.
In order to help the police create a conducive atmosphere for the election process, he requested information. He emphasized the importance of cooperation and urged them to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the authorities. The commissioner assured them that their assistance would be crucial in ensuring a smooth and peaceful election process.
