In the ongoing Edo governorship election, the Peoples Democratic Party has called for the unconditional and immediate release of all voters, including its members and supporters who were unlawfully detained.
The party said in a statement released on Saturday and signed by Debo Ologunagba, its national publicity secretary, that police harassment will not prevent Asue Ighodalo, its candidate for governor, from winning.
The PDP asserted that the arrest was a part of a well-planned scheme by the All Progressives Congress, working with some crooked police officers, to frighten, harass, and repress the Edo people.
The APC, having realized it has lost the election, is allegedly planning to use some dishonest police officials to collude with the PDP in order to intimidate, threaten, and repress the people of Edo State.
One such instance is the Gestapo-style kidnapping of a voter at Uromi Ward 8, Unit 3, as he was waiting in line to cast his ballot, by gunmen under the supervision of the APC. This shameful move serves as another evidence that the APC is in a panic and has already conceded to an impending election defeat.
“Nigerians may remember that our Party warned the people on multiple occasions about this unsettling plot by the APC to rig the election by scaring voters when they realized that our candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, was winning handily, with the unwavering support and unity of the Edo State people.”
The people of Edo State must to know that the APC and its corrupt police officers are out of time. will never back down in the face of terror or aggression. Nothing will convince them to rethink their rejection of the APC.
“The Edo State people are charged by the PDP to maintain their fortitude and to keep fighting for their democratic rights, votes, and eventual election victory.”
