According to Edo State Ministry of Health director of public health Stephenson Ojeifo, the state has one confirmed case of mpox between January and August.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Mr. Ojeifo said that the verified case was one of the 11 suspected cases that the state had filed over the period under consideration.

“The National Reference Laboratory in Abuja received all 11 samples. Ten test results have been received, and one exceptional result is still pending.

The reason for the outstanding is that although the patient is from Edo, the results would be sent by Delta, even if the patient’s sample was taken in Delta State.

“We have one successful example out of the ten outcomes that were obtained. According to Mr. Ojeifo, the case was one of the three suspected instances that had been reported earlier in August.

He claimed that the patient, who was still in good health, was the confirmed case and came from the state’s Esan West Local Government Area.

Prior to the sample being taken, the patient was admitted. He stated, “The patient is well and has been released.

He claims that contact tracing has been completed and that no one has experienced any mpox symptoms since the patient’s release.” Mr. Ojeifo also emphasized the importance of continued vigilance and adherence to preventive measures to prevent further spread of the disease in the community.

He continued, “We are working nonstop to find ways to maintain our borders and heightened surveillance.” Mr. Ojeifo also mentioned that the local health department is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary. He urged residents to remain cautious and report any symptoms promptly to prevent potential outbreaks in the area.
