The construction of 40 dwelling units for judicial personnel in Katampe District, Abuja, was announced by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The contractor is slated to turn over the finished project in 15 months, and 70% of the project’s budget—which includes furnishing—has already been provided. In keeping with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope vision, the gesture is a part of continuous efforts to enhance the welfare of judicial personnel.

This initiative aims to provide affordable housing for judicial personnel in the capital city, ultimately improving their quality of life and ensuring their well-being. The completion of this project will also contribute to the overall development and modernization of the Katampe District in Abuja.

The president approved owner-occupier housing for the judges so they could have their own home at retirement. This will make it difficult for anyone to manipulate or interfere with their duties. The gesture is part of the FCT Administration’s efforts to render services to every Nigerian who comes to FCT to carry out business or wants to reside in Abuja. In 2025, 20 additional houses will be provided to the FCT judiciary and the Industrial Court to benefit from the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, praised the gesture as a significant milestone in the federal government and FCT Administration’s efforts to enhance the welfare of judicial officers in the territory. She stated that the judiciary plays a critical role in safeguarding the rule of law, upholding justice, and protecting citizens’ rights. A supportive and conducive living environment is essential for judicial officers to focus on their duties with independence, impartiality, and integrity.

The construction of the houses is a practical step towards ensuring that judicial officers are well supported, providing a secure and tranquil environment for greater focus, efficiency, and clarity of mind. Mariya Mahmoud, the minister of state, FCT, described Mr. Wike’s commitment towards enhancing infrastructure for the judiciary as “invaluable and inspiring.
