Over 15,000 people displaced by flooding in Jigawa State are currently residing in 45 primary and secondary schools that have been converted into (IDP camps. The state government faces the challenge of resettling these IDPs, who must be relocated to safer areas to prevent future recurrence. Dr Haruna Mairiga, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, stated that the primary challenge is to relocate the IDPs to higher ground to prevent future occurrences. The state government has already purchased N2 billion worth of food items for the IDPs. Additionally, the government is working on providing temporary shelter and basic amenities for the displaced individuals. It is crucial for long-term solutions to be implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of the IDPs.
We have fed the internally displaced people in their camps around four times. We are using schools as camps, as you are aware. Teaching and learning would have been interrupted if we didn’t have a solid working relationship with the schools, according to Mairiga.
He thanked a number of organizations for their contributions, particularly the World Health Organization, which sent medication to treat the internally displaced people.
Recall that the state’s local government districts had a flood disaster that resulted in the relocation of displaced individuals to certain elementary and secondary schools in the vicinity.
