The Kogi State Government has called for assistance from the Federal Government and international donor agencies as floods have affected over 200 communities. The state is currently home to nearly two million people, and the National Emergency Management Agency cannot afford to wait any longer, as the state is already overwhelmed.

We are currently facing a grave emergency, which is regrettable. This flood crisis is terrible; about two million people have already been relocated, and over 200 municipalities have already been flooded. Approximately 50% of the state’s local government areas, or nine out of the twenty-one, are currently impacted. Although we have opened roughly 68 IDP camps, they are unable to accommodate the large number of people. Hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure have all been utterly destroyed. The situation is dire, and urgent action is needed to prevent further loss of life and devastation. Immediate assistance from the federal government and neighboring states is crucial to effectively managing this crisis.

It is a terrible sight to see the elderly and small children in this kind of anguish. We used the early warning and enlightenment strategy, thus we did not lose any lives. Even though we spend a lot of money every day, it is not enough. We demand assistance from the Federal Government, non-governmental organizations, international donor agencies, and philanthropists,” he uttered.

According to Fanwo, the state government formed a Flood Disaster Response Team, headed by the Deputy Governor, to assure the victims of the government’s assistance during the natural calamity.

Ajaokuta, Lokoja, Adavi, Ofu, Idah, and Ibaji are a few of the local government areas that are impacted. The Flood Disaster Response Team has been working tirelessly to provide relief and support to those affected in these areas. Fanwo emphasized the urgent need for additional resources to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents in the affected communities.
