Kwara State Governor Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000, aimed at improving the livelihoods of workers in the state.

The decision, which includes adjustments to salary structures, was made after a successful tripartite meeting between government representatives, the leadership of the Organised Labour in Kwara State, and representatives from the organized private sector.

The Commissioner for Finance, Dr Hauwa Nuru, stated that the wage will be implemented across the Kwara State public service, with immediate effect from October 2024. Nuru, the co-chairperson of the minimum wage committee, expressed gratitude to AbdulRazaq for allowing the committee full autonomy to reach a consensus.

The immediate implementation of the new wage underscores Governor AbdulRazaq’s proactive and worker-friendly approach. The template also covers workers in the 16 local government areas of the state. Nuru appreciated AbdulRazaq’s leadership and foresight, noting that the new wage policy is a timely and much-needed measure to cushion the effects of current economic realities in a sustainable way. She also commended the collaborative spirit between the government and labour unions, stating that the new minimum wage is a testament to the state’s commitment to ensuring workers’ welfare remains at the forefront of its policies.
