Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that his government plans to pay workers a minimum wage of N85,000. This announcement follows the approval of the new minimum wage by the Federal Government and is part of Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers in Lagos State. The Governor also emphasized the importance of ensuring that workers are fairly compensated for their hard work and dedication.
This announcement was made during an interview on Channels TV’s “One-On-One with Babajide Sanwo-Olu” and was made during a meeting attended by the Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, and the leadership of the organized labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, and the Joint Negotiating Council on the new minimum wage. Sanwo-Olu stated that the minimum wage for Lagos is N85,000, not a competition, and that it is a function of affordability and capacity. He expressed his willingness to announce a N100,000 minimum wage in January 2025.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that his government is working for the people and will ensure that areas where serious expenses are not needed are tightened to provide commensurate wages for workers. This comes amid negotiations between state governments and organized labour on the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage approved by the Federal Government. The new minimum wage is expected to take effect in October 2024.
