To address the ongoing system breakdowns, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has scheduled a public investigative hearing for October 24.

The purpose of the hearing is to gather feedback from stakeholders and experts in order to identify the root causes of the issues and develop effective solutions. This initiative aims to improve the overall reliability and efficiency of the electricity system in Nigeria.

The hearing will take place at the commission’s hearing room, located on the fourth floor of Plot 1387 in the Cadastral Zone Central Business District of Abuja, the commission announced on its X website on Monday.

NERC stated, “The hearing is open to all stakeholders, including civil society organizations (CSOs) and the general public.”

Public hearings on important matters concerning the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) are required, according to NERC.

According to the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended), section 48, subsection 1, NERC must hold public hearings on important NESI-related matters.

The commission is concerned about the recent rise in grid disturbances, which frequently cause noticeable outages in a number of states.

It claimed, “therefore undoing many of the recent gains made in lowering infrastructure deficits and enhancing grid stability.”

On Monday, October 14, the grid crashed; the following day, power was restored.

It was the sixth collapse in 2024 and the second in a week on Saturday.

NERC has stated that this hearings to address the grid disturbances and outages in order to prevent further disruptions. The commission is working towards finding solutions to improve infrastructure and grid stability to avoid future collapses.
