The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ondo State is set to begin the issuance of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) on Thursday, October 23rd, 2024. The cards will be available for collection at 18 local government offices until October 29th, 2024. The commission has urged media organizations to collaborate with it to ensure the smooth conduct of the poll, which is scheduled for November 16. The INEC National Commissioner, Mr. Sam Olumekun, emphasized the need for collaboration to address challenges such as apathy, misinformation, and logistical barriers that may prevent citizens from collecting their PVCs.

The cards will be available for collection in 18 local government area offices until October 29th, 2024. Collection by proxy is not allowed, and only those with PVCs will be eligible to exercise their franchise on election day. The commission appealed to influential voices in the media to assist in raising awareness about the ongoing collection, encouraging registered voters to collect their cards, and emphasizing the importance of active participation in the electoral process.

Ondo Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, stated that the workshop would provide participants with a comprehensive knowledge of electoral guidelines, processes, and ethical considerations that must guide media reportage of the poll. She emphasized the importance of adhering to ethical standards and codes of conduct to promote transparency and avoid misinformation, incitement, and any breach of law before, during, and after the election.

Babalola advised media practitioners to focus on reporting the process as it unfolds, ensuring coverage does not incite panic or tension. After the election, they must accurately report the final results, respect official channels for dispute resolution, and avoid contributing to post-election unrest through negative reporting.
