Ondo State’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized state governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for approving a N73,000 minimum salary for public employees. The PDP called the increase during the kickoff of his governorship campaign a “Greek gift” and urged Ondo civil servants not to fall for Aiyedatiwa’s deceitful tactics to support him in November’s election. The fresh increment came after the federal government and organized labour signed an agreement on a new minimum wage of N70,000.

The PDP slammed the APC candidate for the increment, stating that the timing was not auspicious enough. They argued that the announcement of the new minimum wage politicized the welfare and well-being of the state civil service to gain undue political mileage in the upcoming gubernatorial election. Governor Aiyedatiwa responded by stating that the increase in workers’ salaries was not to score cheap political gains. He said the state’s people had decided to be lucky under his administration with the announcement of the new minimum wage.

Ondo state workers have made up their minds to support the party and the governor that treats them well with regular payment of salaries and other benefits. The PDP has noted the anger the people have shown the moment Governor Aiyedatiwa announced a robust minimum wage that is not yet obtainable in any state in Nigeria. They are asking the PDP to heal itself as they have started calculating their pay.
