A private legal practitioner, Barr. Ahmad Kwatarkwashi has called for reconsideration of section 29(1) of the new electoral act assented into law by the President, saying the section will widen the gap of corruption and unnecessary expenses by political aspirants.

Section 29(1) of the new electoral act stipulate that, parties must conduct primaries and submit their list of candidates at least 180 days before general election

But Kwatarkwashi who made his submission when he featured on the Thunder Blowers TV show Dawache Kazo   said if candidates are to campaign for (180) days they would be compelled to make unnecessary expenditures.

He noted that many candidates may be forced to source for fund to attend to the unnecessary demands of the electorates without mincing the financial threshold provided by the electoral act.

The lawyer suggested that the days for campaign may be reduced to a very minimal number so that issues of expenses can be managed.

Though the decision to extend the campaign period to (180) days may not be unconnected with the objectives of getting all pre-election matters decided before the election period,  the lawyer noted that, the expenditure component of the section must not be ignored.
