Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Working Committee (NWC) have agreed to remove Iliya Umar Damagum from his position as acting national chairman. Damagum, a close ally of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, was appointed acting national chairman after Iyorchia Ayu’s removal in June 2023. Governor Bala Mohammed referred to Damagum’s continued office as a “constitutional aberration” and suggested that the North Central region should allow Ayu’s term to end. Damagum was appointed acting national chairman after Ayu’s removal in June 2023.
“It is constitutionally inappropriate for my brother from the North East to be serving as Acting National Chairman right now,” Mohammed declared.
“Any leadership vacancy should be filled by someone from the region where our party originated, as per our party’s constitution.”
“We’ve talked about this issue, and North Central has been eager for this opportunity,” he continued. We are dedicated to collaborating with the party and the NWC to make sure that the North Central is given the opportunity to take on this duty.
In addition, Governor Mohammed emphasized that the North East had previously profited from a similar arrangement when former Governor Ahmadu Muazu assumed leadership of the PDP national committee following Alhaji Bamanga Tukur’s resignation.
