In a statement, NANS Senate President Akinteye Babatunde said that NANS will hold a National Congress on the campus of UNILAG, which will not adjourn until the institution’s Students’ Union Government (SUG) is restored and a legitimate fee review process is put in place. NANS has threatened to close the University of Lagos (UNILAG) if the administration of the institution continues to maintain its stance on fee increases. NANS stated that it will not accept exploitative increments and that it will take action if UNILAG moves forward with the fee hike.
NANS emphasized that they are committed to fighting for the rights of students and ensuring that education remains accessible to all. The organization called on the UNILAG administration to prioritize the welfare of students and engage in dialogue to address their concerns.
He claims that the Congress will provide a forum for students from all over Nigeria to unite and call for equitable treatment and a dedication to high-quality, reasonably priced education.
As seen by the persistent problems with basic amenities on campus, he asserted that the expense of education in Nigeria cannot continue to rise uncontrolled, especially when students receive little to no improvement in facilities or services.
He said: “We urge UNILAG management to have open discussions and adopt a responsible stance that puts students’ academic achievement and well-being first. The whole student body will coalesce in opposition to anything less.
Additionally, we implore all parties involved to keep in mind that education is a right, not a privilege. We are unwavering in our resolve to guarantee that Nigerian students’ opinions are heard and that educational opportunities continue to be just and equal.
We vehemently oppose any agreement to an annual increase in student fees in response to the resolutions made at the most recent meeting between the administration and student representatives of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
We vehemently condemn any attempt to utilize this misinformation to support fee increases that affect students and their families, and the assertion that student reps approved this proposal is untrue.
It is imperative that all decisions regarding student fees are made transparently and in consultation with the student body to ensure fairness and accessibility to education. Any unilateral decision to increase fees without proper consultation undermines the principles of inclusivity and equality in education.
