After consultation, they named the movement “League of Northern Democrats” and within the league, there are former Governors, retired military personnel, police and other professionals.

It was at their inaugural meeting, which took place in Abuja the league agreed that Mal. Ibrahim Shekarau be appointed as its leader.

Shekarau informed the former President that the league was set up with a view to finding a lasting solution to the crisis facing the North.

He stated that part of the objectives of the league is to help the Nigeria youth overcome the challenges of youth unemployment, insecurity, collapse of education and bad leadership in the country.

Shekarau expressed regret how over (93) million registered voters fails in their bid to elect credible and competent leaders that lead the country to the promise end.

“From state Governors of the (36) states and their deputies, President, and his deputy Members of the senate and house of reps, council chairmen and their councilors are not up to (11,000) in terms of their numbers, and you can imagine how over (93) million voters failed to vote for those who are competent to lead them” Shekarau added.

Former President Obasanjo in his response, expressed concern about how ethnic and religious disunity became the baseline of the crises facing the country.

But he expressed confidence that despite these differences, Nigeria can prosper if only it’s people can look in ward to our journey as people and take adequate measures to correct the mistakes.

Obasanjo blamed regionalism and regional politics as the basis for the Nigeria’s socio-economic and political problems.

He urged that he wanted the league to be Nigerian politicians not that of Northern politicians, noting that he would have loved to remain a proud Nigerian than a proud son of Oduduwa.

“I am a proud son of Nigeria, but love for Oduduwa should not over-shines my patriotism and love for Nigeria,” Obasanjo added.

He added that Nigeria must get the most competent person to lead without mincing which parts of the country he came from.

At the closing of the interface, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau assured that they may look at the possibility of amending the name of the league based on suggestions by Chief Obasanjo
