ZAMFARA FED. LAWMAKER RAISES ALARM OVER PROLONG DETENTION OF NIGERIANS.

The member representing Bakura-Maradun at the Federal House of Representatives Ahmad Sani Muhammad has presented a motion for an urgent need to effect a reform in the Nigeria’s judicial system regarding individual in a prolonged detention.

According to a statement shared in his verified Facebook page, Ahmad Sani insisted that even though constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has guaranteed fair and speedy trial, many citizens have been locked in pre-trial detention.

Despite the Constitution guaranteeing a fair and speedy trial, many citizens are stuck in pre-trial detention for far too long, often for minor offenses.

He stated that, the situation does not only violate their rights but also leads to serious overcrowding in the Nigerian Correctional Centers across.

Sani added that, delay in resolving legal matters undermine public confidence in the Nigeria’s judicial system.

He further stated the situation discouraged witnesses from coming forward to testifies on cases of public interest, which in effects the integrity of the nation’s justice system.

“To combat this injustice, I called on the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to review the cases of those held in long-term detention and expedite their trials in the interest of natural justice”.

“I also urged the Judiciary to adopt new case management strategies to ensure timely hearings, especially for those who have been waiting for far too long”.

“Our ultimate goal is to uphold the right to a fair trial for everyone. By tackling these issues head-on, we can rebuild trust in our justice system and ensure it works effectively for all citizens”.
