Former Deputy Governor of Zamfara State Malam Ibrahim Wakkala says, there is need for an amendment to the Nigerian Constitution aimed at stopping INEC from conducting bye elections in Nigeria.
Malam Wakkala who spoke in a TV show programme of Thunder Blowers in Zamfara said, the tragedy that usually characterized bye elections in Nigeria calls for concern.
He said whenever there is a scheduled bye election, political parties usually take it as a “show of force” and went to an extent of deploying all machinery including resources to make sure that their parties wins the election.
“Bye elections in Nigeria usually caused tension and acrimony amongst party supporters. Lives are lost properties are destroyed and huge amount of money is wasted all with a view to ensuring that their political party succeeds over another” Wakkala added.
“If I can have my way I will make sure that INEC is compelled by law to stop conducting bye elections because it enhances hatred and create confusion within the polity” added Wakkala.
He described the recent bye election in Bakura as clear testimony of his claim saying people needs to learn a lesson and take it easy by not allowing politicians to destroy their long term relationship.
