Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Abubakar, has announced his resignation.

On Saturday night, August 24, Ahmed Abubakar, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), submitted a letter of resignation to President Bola Tinubu. This came about as a result of their meeting at the presidential mansion in Abuja. Abubakar claimed that he resigned for family and personal reasons, although he clarified that none of these problems were serious. Abubakar resigned, ending his employment as the director general of the NIA.

Thanking the President, Abubakar the departing head of the NIA thanked President Tinubu for giving him the chance to lead over the first 15 months of his presidency. He recognized the unique chance to serve two presidents in a row and felt honored to have worked under the President’s direction. Ahmed Abubakar’s tenure as NIA Director General spanned several years, beginning with his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018. His term was extended in December 2021, enabling him to continue serving until his recent decision to step down. Abubakar’s resignation came after a routine briefing with President Bola Tinubu, during which he submitted his resignation letter. The President accepted his resignation, bringing an end to Abubakar’s extended tenure as NIA Director General.

Abubakar also thanked the NIA staff for their dedication and support throughout his time as Director General. His departure marks the end of an era for the agency, as a new leader will soon be appointed to take over his responsibilities.
