Governor of Osun State Ademola Adeleke revealed plans on Thursday for his administration to start producing electricity for the state utilizing solar and river resources that are currently accessible.

During the flag-raising ceremony for the 33kv feeder line in Ilesa, Osun State, Adeleke expressed his aim for Osun to become self-sufficient in electricity supply and to export to surrounding states.

The governor noted that the project had been put off for more than 11 years, during which time the people of Obokun and three other local government districts endured immense suffering, blackouts, and financial losses.

He also revealed that the state is working on a draft policy and bill that will increase the production and distribution of electricity.

The Ministry of Energy has been directed to create a comprehensive implementation plan, ensuring stakeholder involvement for sustainable outcomes, and has also announced plans to expand power generation and distribution.

When the bill and policies are eventually signed into law, Osun’s electrical landscape will be altered. With so many rivers and solar resources at our disposal, we will produce our own electricity. We will grant permits to individuals who are able to produce electricity. We’ll control the Ibadan Disco, our power distributor. We will oversee the interaction between buyers and power producers. The state electricity industry will have a regulatory body established under the new model.
