The Federal Government has been requested to drop all charges against #EndBadGovernance protestors by the Initiative Against Human Right Abuse and Torture (INAHURAT). INAHURAT argues that the protestors were exercising their constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. They are calling for a dismissal of all charges in order to uphold these fundamental rights.
Gerald Katchy, the organization’s national coordinator, made the plea on Friday during a briefing in Abuja.
Justice Emeka Nwite was lauded by Katchy for using his judgment and approving the August 1 protestors’ bail variation.
The two applications for the 76 and 29 protesters still in detention without trial,” he pleaded with the judge to consider.
He pointed out that the demonstrators’ rights were being violated and that their prolonged imprisonment was illegal.
The protesters still in detention are young, jobless people whose only crime is that they demand an end to bad governance,” he stated. The protesters’ goals have already been achieved; rather than seeing a decrease in energy sector costs, we are still witnessing increases while voices are being silenced.
Youths need to get ready to save what’s left of our nation. The organized labor force needs to step up and overcome their shyness.
INAHURAT demands that all charges against these young people (protesters) be dropped by the Attorney General of the Federation and the Federal Government, as their continued detention is illegal and a violation of their rights.” INAHURAT is calling for solidarity among all Nigerians to support the protesters and ensure their release. The youth and labor force must unite to push for lasting change in the country’s governance.
