Tony Okocha, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker Committee in Rivers, has declared that the party will carry on disapproving the Governor Siminalayi Fubara-led administration in a constructive manner for the benefit of the people of the state.
Okocha emphasized the importance of holding the government accountable and ensuring that the needs of the people are prioritized. He also mentioned that the APC will continue to offer alternative solutions and policies to address the challenges facing Rivers State.
He stated that it was the APC’s responsibility to keep Fubara’s administration in constant check and that the opposition in Rivers would speak for the voiceless through constructive criticisms and pointing out grey areas.
Okocha argued that applauding the PDP government in Rivers would not help the party win future elections in the state. He stated that the party’s business is to constructively criticize the government, as it gives them an edge. Okocha also stated that the APC’s desire is to see the ruling party and other opposition parties weakened so it can have a smooth sail in the 2027 general elections.
He urged against allowing the ruling party and other opposition parties to become united, as the Labour Party did with Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election. Okocha also clarified that the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers were not members of the APC and that there was no proof of their registration as APC members. The Federal High Court dismissed the suit, which was instituted by the Action Peoples Party (APP), as it was statute-barred. The action was filed after the statutory period for such situations expired, the court decided. Okocha also underlined the APC’s continued commitment to a transparent and equitable election process in 2027.
