The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in Nigeria, including NASU and SSANU, has directed its members to go on a nationwide indefinite strike from Monday due to the non-payment of four months withheld salaries.

The JAC stated that the strike will continue until their demands are met by the government, emphasizing the importance of addressing the issue promptly to avoid further disruptions in the education sector.

The strike is scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 27, 2024. The JAC issued a circular to all branch chairmen of NASU and SSANU in universities and inter-university centers, explaining that the strike was rescheduled due to the Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches on the same date.

The JAC criticized the government’s inaction on the issue, despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval for 50% of the withheld salaries to be paid. The JAC has issued multiple notices to the government to address the situation, but the sincerity of the government’s commitment to the cause remains questionable. The JAC has decided to move the effective date for the strike to mid-night on Sunday, October 27, 2024, to allow NASU branch officers to be on ground before commencing the strike. The JAC expresses its deep appreciation for the government’s commitment and affirms its determination to persist in the struggle until ultimate victory is secured.

JAC is urging all NASU members to stand in solidarity and participate in the strike action to ensure their demands are met. The JAC is also calling on the government to prioritize the welfare of university workers and address the issue promptly.
