The Attorney General of Zamfara and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Junaidu Aminu has declared that, the state is battling with court cases on various debt accrued worth over N50 billion naira.
The Attorney General who made the declaration during a ceremony to mark his assumption of office said it’s unfortunate the state does not have any alternative source of funds apart from monthly cash allocation from Abuja.
Barr. Junaidu Aminu said the debt was largely inherited from the previous governments and because government is a continuous process, the present governor has to find a way of settling the debt and move on with the management of the state.
He said two years back Zamfara state government has allowed for auctioning of its assets worth over one billion naira for a debt of just sixty million naira which is supposed to be settled, but government of that time failed to take things seriously as they should be.
He noted further that, if the previous governments have taken the issue of debt repayment seriously they should have settled the debtors out of court explaining that, despite the intervention of some prominent persons in the state the immediate past administration for reasons best known to it refused to take the appropriate steps of paying off the debt.
