FEDERAL VERSITY GUSAU STUDENTS STAGE PEACEFUL PROTEST OVER INCESSANT KIDNAPPING

At the early hours of Saturday the 17th of June 2023 students of Federal University Gusau took to the street to demonstrate their anger over incessant kidnapping of their colleagues by suspected armed bandits.
On Friday night, some suspected bandits armed with deadly weapons invaded one of the private hostels occupied by the University students at Damba Area, an outskirt of Gusau the capital city of Gusau and abducted five students.
The abduction of these five students came barely two months after another set of students were abducted by another set of kidnappers.
One of the students interviewed by this medium, said about fifteen students of the Federal University, Gusau were so far abducted by bandits.
Reluctantly, he said the parents of these students were left with the burden of sourcing for funds to pay for ransom, noting that neither the management of the university nor the state government was concerned about the problem.
Another student who spoke on condition of anonymity said, the University has failed to provide hostel accommodation for the students living them with no option than to secure for commercial hostels outside the university campus.
The student added that even if there is hostel accommodation, the University has no perimeter fence; hence the bandits can have access to the campus directly.
The protestors blocked the popular Gusau-Zaria road for close to three hours and until the military came to clear the road for commuters to move, hundreds of people on transit along the highway.
The road was later cleared after several appeal by both the management and other prominent personalities in Damba.
A source said the protest was conducted peacefully; hence no student was carrying any prohibited arms and neither attempted to attach the military and the civilians on the road.
