Flood disaster has resulted to the death of over (30) persons in most part of Kebbi State in North Western Nigeria.
Chairman of the Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency Alh Sani Dododo in an interview with the BBC Hausa service said the disaster has caused a serious psychological crises for the people of Kebbi State.
“In all the 21 Local Government council areas in Kebbi State there is no single local government area that has not suffered from this year’s flooding” Dododo added.
“We have so far lost over 30 people to flooding this year in Birnin Kebbi couple with other economic losses we have experienced”.
In some communities like Makera in Kalgo local government and some parts of Birnin Kebbi residents testified that all over their houses water are gushing out deep inside their inner rooms and day-in-day-out houses and other important structures are collapsing.
Dododo said the government has to look for optional public structures such as schools to accommodate the victims in form of temporary shelter pending other actions instituted by the government.
“All our fadama areas bordering Sokoto State especially from a place they called Tudu up to Tugga in Bagudo local government area of Kebbi State are all filled up with water”.
“We have taken much step to provide to these victims food, water, toilets and security which are the primary things needed by these people in their new temporary settlements while we await for further directive from the government”
“We have secured (9) temporary settlements in Argungu alone, we have also opened temporary camps in Bagudo, Koko Bese and other areas where our personals are working to get us update on the development” Dododo explained.
On why there has been annual occurrence of flooding in Kebbi Dodo said, Kebbi has become like a water pipe hence the two major dams we have in Zamfara and Sokoto Bakolori and Goronyo and also the two other dams in Cameron that also plush their water to Kebbi through a village called Dole Kaina in Dandi local government make the pressure of flooding too excessive for Kebbi State.
“Since the creation of Goronyo and Bakolori dams for close to fourth years, they have never being cleared for once added with the human and environmental factors make flooding in Kebbi annual expected disaster”
He said there has to be strong collaboration between the federal government, Kebbi State, and neighbouring countries of Niger and Cameron so that measures can be collectively instituted to address the annual flooding problem in Kebbi.
