Saturday Feature Story
One of the happiest moments for victims of the flood disaster in Gummi local government area of Zamfara State was witnessed a few days back with the flag off phase (1) of the housing reconstruction by Sen. Representing Zamfara West, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar.
His commitment to putting smiles on the faces of thousands of family members whose hope was almost dashed remains evergreen in both his political and philanthropic move as Senator and politician.
I could remember writing an article on this medium calling his attention to visit Gummi himself a day after the unfortunate incident after Hon. Sani Takori Gummi has raised serious concern that Gummi people are not pleased with the delegations earlier sent by Senator Yari.
In line with his usual humility, Yari visited Gummi town I think two days later and committed himself to the full reconstruction project of Gummi.
Before his committee finished the assessment of the level of damaged caused by the flood disaster, the Senator offered immediate support of relief materials such as food, blankets, roofing zinc among other things.
Now the Senator is back to fulfilled his pledge as the committee leading the project under Federal Commissioner for Population Commission Muttaqa Rini Makaman Zamfara was in Gummi to flag off the commencement of the exercise.
According to the statement by Ibrahim Muhammad Birnin Magaji the spokesperson of Yari political group, the committee has divided the entire programme into three categories.
The first category comprises(706) houses with 11-15 room capacity, while the second category has houses that have 7-9 rooms and the third category with 1-6 rooms capacity.
The victims are to receive cement, roofing zinc and cash donations to ensure that the destroyed structures are fixed.
In my candid opinion, this is one of the most heart torching humanitarian interventions that will go memory lane in the history of the political carrier of Sen. Abdulaziz Yari and beyond.
His name will be written in gold, especially with the consideration that the majority of the beneficiaries are both poor and in need of such intervention.
Essentially, politicians and wealthy people need to exhibit this kind of humanitarian heart owned by Sen. Yari and begin to intervene and torch the lives of the people of their immediate constituents.
It is important for the Emirate council to set up a standard aimed at checkmating the beneficiaries and ensure that the intervention has not ended in the open market for sales.
As for the Senator, it is essentially significant to always intimate the committee handling the implementation of the project to get first-hand information regarding the progress made so far.
HOW TO ABORT RE- OCCURRING FLOOD DISASTER IN GUMMI
I had once written an article on how Sen. Yari the Chairman Senate Committee on Water resources and Aminu Sani Jaji the Chairman of the house committee on Ecological Funds can assist Gimmi people to overcome the frequent occurrence of flood disaster in their domain.
I will still emphasize that, there is need for the elders of Gummi Emirate council led by Emir of Gummi His Highness Retired Justice Lawal Hassan Gummi to teem up together and reach out to these two significant personalities to be able to attract the attention of the Federal government intervention.
The scenario in Gummi as argued in the previous article is beyond the capacity of the state government to handle.
It is important to use the opportunity of the positions of these personalities to submit a blueprint to the federal government on how best to address the crisis of flood disaster in Gummi town.
