SUPREME COURT ORDERS ACCELERATED HEARING OF BAYELSA PDP GOVERNORSHIP PRIMARIES

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered parties involved to speed processes in an appeal filed by Timi Alaibe challenging the election of Duoye Diri as the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the February governorship election in Bayelsa State.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad who presided over the five-member panel asked the appellants and respondents to regularise their processes having withdrawn two applications pending before the court.

After the resumption of proceedings on Tuesday, counsel to the PDP and Governor Diri, Emmanuel Enoedem and Chief Chris Uche (SAN), observed that they were not opposed to the application by the appellant to regularise his processes.

It should be recalled that prior to the PDP primary election, Timi Alaibe had dragged the party to Federal High Court, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, for not being satisfied with the composition of the 3-man panel which the court declined jurisdiction.

After losing out in the primaries, Alaibe proceeded to the Federal High Court, Owerri, praying the court to nullify the primary election which Diri won.

Still not satisfied with the ruling of the high court, Alaibe proceeded to the Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri.

The Appeal Court however, dismissed his appeal while ruling against fresh governorship primary election.

Having still not satisfied with the decision of the Appeal Court, Alaibe approached the Supreme Court where he is praying the court to declare him the duly elected governor of Bayelsa State.

The matter was, however, stalled on Tuesday by the court and asked Alaibe’s lawyer, S.T. Ologunorisa, to regularise his processes, having withdrawn two applications which were not opposed by the lawyer to the defendant.

The Apex Court noted that once the processes were regularised a new date would be fixed for hearing.

Former Governor of Zamfara state and Senator representing Zamfara West, Hon. Dr. Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar (Shattiman Zamfara) has secured (13) trucks of Maize containing (3900) bags for distribution to his immediate community of Talatar Mafara.

The distribution is to be handled by the (11) man committee headed by Malam Hamza Abubakar.

A total of 68 communities consisting of 21,075 households will benefit with a total of 3900 bags of Maize.

According the chairman, the beneficiaries cut across religious devices as instructed by the donor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar.

According to the committee Chairman, former Governor Yari has considered the social condition of the people emanating from the removal of fuel subsidy by the current administration.

He assured that, the committee will be just and fair in the discharge of their duties.

He called on people to give them maximum support and cooperation in the discharged of their duty in order to achieve the desire success.

The Federal Road Safety Corp Adamawa state command has revealed that a total of (31) people died as a result of various road crashes within the state.

The statistics also showed that, a total of (274) people also sustained various degree of injuries as a result of the road crashes.

The Adamawa sector command also recorded (126) various road crashes involving (548) passengers within the period under review.

The statistics covered a period of January to July 2023.

The sector commandant of the state, Mr. Yelwa Dio when he interacted with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He attributed the road crashes to over-loading, over speeding and making telephone calls while driving.
