The Chairman of the election monitoring committee of APGA in the just concluded Bakura State Assembly bye election Alh Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi said the purported withdrawal notice from the race by the Zanfara State chapter of All Progressive Congress APC is a clear demonstration that Zamfara APC leadership is ignorant of the provision of the nation’s electoral act.
Wamban shinkafi who was reacting to the question from journalist shortly after the declaration of result of Bakura state assembly bye election on Wednesday said by electoral guidelines APC cannot withdraw from the supplementary election since the number of days required by the electoral law to perfect the withdrawal are not met by the party.
He noted that by virtue of section (35) of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended APC has not met the requirements of the law to perfect its withdrawal from the race.
Section (36) of the electoral act says “a candidate may withdraw his candidature by notice in writing signed by him and delivered by himself to the political party that nominated him for the election and the political party shall convey such withdrawal to the Commission not later than 45 clays to the election”.
Shinkafi further said, another fact that will show that APC has participated at the Bakura supplementary election is evidences of scores recorded by the party in almost all the poling units where the election took place noting that if they have withdrawn their supporters wouldn’t have joined the queue to cast their votes for the party.
He insisted that, the former Governor should have to accept the reality of the time that, PDP is now in charge and that people of Zamfara State have made up their mind to go with the PDP.
He said with the recent developments that characterized the conduct of the Bakura bye election there is much need for the amendment of the electoral act to enable the electoral umpire and stakeholders provided suitable options to some of the provisions that are in active in addressing some of the emerging developments in the nation’s political system.
