In what appeared to be a dramatic political event, the All Progressive Congress APC Zamfara State has raised the alarm that, beside acting outside the jurisdiction of the constitution and state enacted laws, the ruling People’s Democratic Party PDP has mischievously taken another wrong step of appointing more than a Supervisory Councilor per political ward in Zurmi and Maradun local government areas of the state.
In a Press Statement Issued on Saturday, State Publicity Secretary of the party Malam Shehu Isah described what transpired on Friday in the fourteen local government areas of Zamfara State where Supervisory Councilors were sworn-in by the PDP led government as not only laughable event but an outright democratic embarrassment which every patriotic Nigerian democrat need to condemn.
He noted that, while the Supreme Court ruling on Ekiti State in December 2019 prohibited State Governors from dissolving elected Council Chairmen and also banned the appointment of the Local Government Sole Administrators, the PDP government in Zamfara State re-affirmed its lack of respect for the rule of law and integrity of the Supreme Court by going further to appoint Supervisory Councilors that are out of geo- political arithmetic.
The Publicity Secretary pointed that, while Zurmi has 11 poling wards, Matawalle led government went ahead to appoint 19 Supervisory Councilors for the local government council while Maradun that, has 10 poling wards have 11 Supervisory Councilors appointed by the PDP government.
While describing the political development as unfortunate, Shehu Isah challenged PDP led government in Zamfara State to provide to the public any provision of the law that empowers it to appoint a Supervisory Councilors or alter with the political alignment of the poling wards in the state.
He further noted that, if the actions of the PDP led government are allow to go unchallenged, one day, it will rise and remove all the state assembly and other elected members that are not in the same party and appoint legislative supervisors to show its level of disregard for the supremacy of the constitution and other subsidiary laws of land.
