Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital is second most reliable tertiary health facility in Zamfara State initiated by the former administration of Mahmuda Aliyu Shinkafi but completed and put to use by the former administration of Abdulazeez Yari Abubakar.
It was one of the viable projects that was accorded priority by the past government of Abdulazeez Yari Abubakar as he make sure that the tertiary health facility was granted it’s autonomy by the state House of assembly and provided with all the facilities needed for it’s operation.
When Bello Matawalle come to power as executive Governor of Zamfara State he did not make his achievements and silent transformation at the hospital public since he has embarked on rapid upgrading of the health facilities, human resource empowerment as well provision of financial support to the specialist hospital.
REFORMS AT THE ICU DEPARTMENT
According to the Medical Director of the Hospital Dr. Ahmad Usman Shanawa when he took over the mantle of leadership of the hospital, the ICU department is almost none existing hence the facilities and trained staff were not adequately provided.
According to the medical director at the inception, the Governor procured facilities for the setting up of six bed capacity ICU unit with specialized beds equiped with their monitors, ventilators, x-ray facilities including mobile x-ray machines among other facilities required.
According to Shanawa “based on the testimony by several experts that visited the section, it was assessed to be one of the best ICU in the entire tertiary health facilities in the North West”
REFORMS AT THE THEATER COMPLEX
The Medical Director of the Specialist Hospital also said, the facility is now provided with all the equipments needed for different forms of theater.
He said Governor Matawalle was passionate about making the hospital well equiped and based on the need assessment conducted the Governor procured all the machines required for various forms of theater as well as allow room for engagement of (18) different medical consultants two among them which are professors.
Shanawa added that, the Specialist Hospital is now conducting eye and paediatric theater, conduct various forms of surgeries and to a significant extent the Governor procured endoscopy tower machine which is basically used for the conduct of new modern theater.
REFORMS AT DENTAL DEPARTMENT
At the dental department, Dr. Shanawa insisted that, when he assumed office the facilities used at the dental department were almost obsolate hence they were malfunctional.
He said Governor Bello Matawalle had since procured dental x-ray machine, supplied two dental units as well as other facilities needed to make the dental department functional.
Shanawa said with the facilities the Specialist Hospital has now become one of the training ground for dental students undergoing their training from College of Health Science Tsafe and many other colleges around the catchment areas.
ON THE GENERAL ADMINISTRATION
The Medical Director of the hospital explained that Governor Matawalle has provided an enabling ground for rapid expansion of the health facility hence the Governor has provided adequate funds for the expansion of the hospital by additional 96 bed capacity.
He also said, enabling environment has also being provided for the staff of the hospital to be sent for additional training as well as provided enough funds for the hospital to be able to expand it’s horizons and accommodate more professionals in to the activities of the hospital.
CHALLENGES TO STARTING OF RESIDENCY
Based on the facilities provided and human resource available, Yariman Bakura Specialists Hospital has all the capacity to commence it’s residency programme
Dr. Shanawa stated that the primary objective of setting up of Yariman Bakura Specialists Hospital is to among other things offer specialize care for the people, served as referral center, conduct research and offer specialize training of “residency” to junior medical doctors.
He said Yariman Bakura is fit to start residency training only if it’s uncompleted residential quarters can be put to finishing hence it has the capacity to accommodate up to thirty medical personals
EDITORIAL OPINION
This medium is of the humble opinion that Governor Bello Matawalle should sustain his good work in the upgrading of the status of the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital because if the uncompleted residential estate is the only obstacle that limited the hospital to starting its residency program then he should in the interest of his good will assist the hospital the usual way he used to do so that our indigenous local doctors can begin their residency training at home.
The reality of what is on the ground at the Yariman Bakura Specialists Hospital during our facility tour is that, the effort put in place by the current government of Bello Matawalle has been supportive of the giant stride the current MD and his management staff are doing in making the hospital proud.
The Governor whom we hailed at this point should please support the hospital to commence it’s residency so that his name can be written in Gold even after he ends his tenure(s).
