An Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gummi has called on the Federal Government to came up with a literacy empowerment programme aimed at equipping armed bandits operating in the forest with both western and Islamic education.
Gummi who declared this during a weekly preaching session held in Gusau on Friday said what he saw during his visit at Zamfara forests demonstrated that there is a high rate of illiteracy amongst the bandits.
He expressed hope that, if the bandits are educated the excessive killings of innocent souls will be minimized to the barest minimum.
In a statement by Yusuf Idris Gusau the Governor’s Director General on Press Affairs said, the level of illiteracy amongst the bandits in majority of the camps visited calls for concern by Government and all other stakeholders hence educating the bandits is the only way out.
Gummi also called on the Islamic scholars to extend their preaching sessions to the rural areas in order to reach out to the majority of the populace who are not in tendam with the reality of time.
